Fun Facts about the Kalverstraat

The rents in the Kalverstraat are the highest in the Netherlands. Also in the Dutch version of Monopoly it is the most expensive street.

Kalverstraat, being located so close to Dam Square, used to be a livestock market. The name Kalverstraat probably comes from being a calves market..

In 1345, a miracle is said to have taken place in the Kalverstraat. A sick man received the Last Supper, he vomited the Host and it fell into the fire but it didn't burn. They took it out of the fire and put it in a case.

Maximilian the Habsburg emperor of the German-Austria empire heard about that miracle and came to Amsterdam and was healed. Because he was so thankful, he gave his crown to everything he liked- for example, the Westerkerk.

Kalverstraat’s Secret

Kalverstraat 58 is the address of the beautiful Petrus and Paulus church. It used to be a hidden church because Catholic churches were forbidden in the Netherlands after the reformation. From the outside you can just see the little entrance door but when you enter you will find a quiet place in all the business of the Kalverstraat.
