Rijksmuseum

Rijksmuseum

If you’re here in Amsterdam for a few days and want to learn about Dutch history, then the Rijksmuseum (the National Museum) will be the perfect place for you to visit. At the Rijksmuseum, you’ll find first-class paintings by Holland’s most famous artists, like Rembrandt and Vermeer, as well as an impressive collection of artifacts that tell about 800 years of Dutch history.

About the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

The Rijksmuseum opened its doors in 1885 and expanded again and again since then. After the collection had grown too much, the old building wasn’t big enough to accommodate it. So a renovation and reconstruction was necessary in 2003. In 2013, it reopened. The Rijksmuseum is structured by centuries and shows the development of Dutch art and history in a clear manner. Sculptures, furniture, fashion, weapons, ships, drawings, and Asian art (from when a part of Asia was a Dutch colony) are also included. The museum possesses a large amount of original paintings, like Rembrandt’s “Nightwatch.” But the exhibitions don’t stand still in time. New, modern artifacts are always coming in and help the museum maintain its vivid character.

Take your time!

Be aware that the Rijksmuseum is literally Holland’s largest museum, so bring time with you; you would need the whole days to get a good look around. You can also pick out sections you’re interested in before you begin your tour! A good place to rest after an exciting and exhausting museum tour is the new garden, from which you have an excellent view on the impressive building that is the Rijksmuseum. All works have good descriptions and explanations in Dutch and in English, and you can also get a multimedia guide.
